Important Additional Notes for Chapter 12 ~ The New Deal
FDR said he wanted to reach out to the “Forgotten Man” who was suffering in the Great Depression.
The New Deal can be described with three “R’s” Relief, Recovery and Reform.
Relief: immediate help, $$$, jobs, food
Recovery: get the economy “going” to end the Great Depression
Reform: programs and regulations to prevent future depressions
Fireside Chats: Helped FDR “connect” with the American people via radio.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)- provided jobs to young men as a way to help themselves and their families. Worked in National Parks and Forests (eventually phased out w/ the war)
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)- protected bank deposits, prevented bank runs (still exists)
Federal Housing Administration (FHA)-  encouraged loans for renovating or building homes (still exists)
Scope/Role of government in everyday life
Some people felt the role and size of government was becoming too powerful due to the New Deal
Social Security dealt with a national issue, too big for families or individuals to tackle
Roosevelt saw an active role for government in business and individual’s lives
